Starting Off...

Our lives are more sedentary now than ever and for that reason fitness is also more important now than ever.

From the big things like cars, busses and subways that discourage us from walking to the little things like elevators and escalators that make talking the stairs less and less common, we simply don’t burn calories in all the little ways like we used to.

It’s no wonder people (and even their pets!) are having such a hard time keeping tummies trim.

But fear not, people!—Technology isn’t all bad. In fact, some of it is actually designed to make us healthier on the inside and out.

With the increasing prevalence of smartphones, fitness apps have become a popular tool for flaying flab.

But with so many apps out there and with so many different features, which one is the right one for you?

The answer?—Whichever fitness app you can commit to. Try a few different ones and find one that you really enjoy.

To help you get started, here are five fantastic fitness apps that are totally worth trying.

FitStar Personal Trainer

The days of needing to be a millionaire to afford a world-class body are at an end thanks to Tony Gonzalez’s training app, FitStar. Based in San Francisco, the FitStar team has built an application that is reflective of one of the most physically-fit cities in America.

As a smart-app, FitStar learns about you and your exercise habits on the fly so it can build custom workouts designed to help you push your limits to new heights.

How does it work?—At the conclusion of each and every workout FitStar’s Personal Trainer will ask a series of questions about the quality of your workout. Using your actual responses, FitStar will build a whole brand new workout that will help you push the envelope without going to extremes.

Best of All?—No equipment is necessary to do the range of exercises included in the FitStar application.

Runstastic Six Pack Abs

Runtastic makes a number of applications for the fitness geek in all of us, but we’re going to focus on the one that takes that flabby one-pack into a shredded six.

If you’ve ever done a real sit-up, you know how hard it can be to overcome weak abdominal muscles. Unfortunately, weak abdominals are probably the biggest obstacle in the way of your improved health, after all everything starts with you core. Fortunately for you, Runtastic has developed a proprietary Ab application that features a wide array of core exercises.

How does it work? Just enter a few personal details like your height and weight, choose a male or female avatar, swipe through the available routines and get cracking; the programs can last anywhere from one or two days, to thirty.

Worried about straining an oblique? Don’t be. Each and every exercise program includes a number of slow-motion instructional videos to ensure you can do each move safely before getting underway.

As mention above in our FitStar segment, personal trainers are insanely expensive.

Having said that, investing in a personal trainer is one of the best ways to improve your health…which explains why they have, traditionally, been able to charge so much for their services.

But fear not friends! Fitness apps have come to the rescue!

Like FitStar, Fitmo is another personal trainer application that can genuinely help you turn your life around.

For just small monthly fee, you can enjoy the perks of your own personal trainer (in digital form of course) at a fraction of what an in-the-flesh trainer would cost.

Not only will Fitmo help you develop a routine and check-in on your progress (with texts and video messages), but it will actually suggest meal ideas and general lifestyle improvements.

A personal favorite, MyFitnessPal is less exercise-focused and more diet-centric but unlike other apps that try to make your dietary habits a thing of beauty, this one actually works.

Logging your meals, snacks and other edibles is a breeze thanks to the apps massive inventory of pre-packaged foods. Even if you make something from scratch, MyFitnessPal has oodles of nutritional facts about baseline ingredients to help you stick to your goals even when you’re making something that comes without labeled nutritional data. Save your favorite meals in within your profile to make data entry a snap in the future.

And unlike some of the other apps already mentioned, this one is free which makes it even that much more appealing.

Bon Appetite!

Fitnet is another cool application, particularly if you’re not one to be shy about your workout routine.

Unlike some other applications that rely on post-workout questionnaires or Bluetooth sync with a wearable device, Fitnet tracks your progress via the camera on your Smartphone or tablet. The camera will record your progress and take note if you need to take a break, start losing your form or simply slow down.

So if you’re OK with, well, being watched—Fitnet is a great way to make sure you’re doing the workout the way it was intended.

Wrapping It All Up...

So there you have it, The Five Fitness Apps Worth Trying as we see it! If you don’t like what this list has to offer, that’s OK! Remember, ultimately the best fitness app is the one you can commit to. If you already have an app you love, don’t feel the need to switch, just keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll improve your health soon enough.
